BOOK FAIR
FORT ZEELANDIA BLOCK, PARAMARIBO
August 25 - 30, 2003 : 16:00 - 22:00 HRS
Literature has definitely not been stashed away
in a dusty corner these days, no, “les belles lettres” have been
given a great spot in the heart of historical Paramaribo, in
Suriname’s Museum in Fort Zeelandia. The courtyard of the museum
will be a market place with stalls for prose and poetry,
children’s literature, study books, scientific reports. In
short: here is where you’ll find food for thought – to look at
and/or for sale. Spontaneous poetry recitals, writers
autographing their work, and fascinating readings will provide
exciting moments.
The Fair’s Program exists mainly of: presentations, readings,
recitals in a creative form, story telling, and for the young
ones: bedtime stories during daytime! Under guidance of the
Writers Group ’77 (the Surinamese writer’s association) the
literary in’s and out’s of the regions finest writers will be
discussed: what moves them, what inspires them and the deeper
meaning of their work.
In front of Building 1790 the more classical forms of music will
be performed. Let the music take you back in time.
THE GRAND MARKET
August 25 - 30, 2003
The Grand Market is a lively Art and Culture
Market where you’re bound to spend hours without noticing how
time flies. The various booths make the Grand Market an eventful
place. There are craft products, for sale as well as
demonstrations of how the distinct products have been made. Then
there is: traditional medicine (an inter-active exhibition
organized by Carafta), music instruments, clothes, batik, music,
publications, art postcards, sweets & candies, etc. Flowers and
plants add to the joyful atmosphere. You’ll witness a very
creative use of material of people working with the gifts of
nature; it will give the audience a sneak preview of what’s in
store at the Flower and Orchid Show later during the week.
On the platform there is a separate program going on during the
opening hours of the Grand Market, with fashion shows and
cultural country presentations, cook-outs, demonstrations in the
field of traditional medicine, musical entertainment, special
program’s for children.
Not only the stage will be used, but the whole area. Little
unexpected events as well as great surprises are in store...
Learn how to drape clothing in a fashionable way in a
quick-course, take a detour and see how a special herbal medicin
is being prepared on the spot. Stilt-walkers, dencers,
musicians: playful and spontaneous intermezzo’s will surely
cross your path at the Grand Market. Little café’s are there for
thirsty visitors. The Foundation for Tourism in Suriname (STS)
and Tours, another organization in the field of tourism, have
installed a booth with tourist info about Suriname.
Participating countries will get the chance too, to put up
information about their country. Last, but not least: sending a
postcard home is made easy by Suriname’s postal company Surpost.
They have put up a small post booth for your convenience.
